The Dalles is a dangerous ending to a long long journey!!!

The Dalles

The Dalles is where pioneers loaded their wagons onto rafts or barges and floated down the Columbia River to the mouth of Willamette valley then on to Oregon City. It was a very stony river narrow passing. This is where the trail came to a complete dead end due to the mountains. Here pioneers floated down the Columbia River in rafts to Oregon that was close to 80 miles away. The river was wide and the currents were strong! It was very dangerous. Many pioneers hired Native Americans to help them cross the river because it was so dangerous! The pioneers just wanted to claim their land!!! Angus H.
